Russian Scientists Discover Ice Enclosed Mammoth

"Mammoth find: Preserved Ice Age giant found with flowing blood in Siberia"

     According to, a female wooly mammoth was found by Russian scientists. The mammoth had actual blood flowing out while being excavated. They believed that the mammoth lived anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 years ago. "The muscle tissue of the animal was also well-preserved and had a natural red color of fresh meat, added the scientist.", that's 10,000 year old refrigerated meat. 

     This finding almost instantly raises the ethics behind cloning. As an advocate of life itself, it seems natural to encourage the existence of it. This includes the mighty wooly mammoth. Jurassic Park highlights this argument, siding on the part of nature. We are only limited by our creativity and what we imagine we can accomplish. A wooly mammoth alive today would mark an incredible feat, and while the ethics are still debated it seems inevitable that one day we will try to accomplish that feat.

Most People on Earth will Suffer as a Consequence of Unfiltered Water in Two Generations

     An article published on informed that, "A conference of 500 leading water scientists from around the world today issued a stark warning that, without major reforms, 'in the short span of one or two generations, the majority of the 9 billion people on Earth will be living under the handicap of severe pressure on fresh water, an absolutely essential natural resource for which there is no substitute. This handicap will be self-inflicted and is, we believe, entirely avoidable.'".

     Among the different statistics mentioned, humanity uses land the size of South America for agriculture, and land the size of Africa for livestock. Another astonishing average was the fact that a large dam has been built every day for the last 130 years. The article goes on and continues with ways to help the future with a predicament that we can see coming two generations away:

"1) Make a renewed commitment to adopt a multi-scale and interdisciplinary approach to water science in order to understand the complex and interlinked nature of the global water system and how it may change now and in future.
2) Execute state-of-the-art synthesis studies of knowledge about fresh water that can inform risk assessments and be used to develop strategies to better promote the protection of water systems.
3) Train the next generation of water scientists and practitioners in global change research and management, making use of cross-scale analysis and integrated system design.
4) Expand monitoring, through traditional land-based environmental observation networks and state-of-the-art earth-observation satellite systems, to provide detailed observations of water system state.
5) Consider ecosystem-based alternatives to costly structural solutions for climate proofing, such that the design of the built environment in future includes both traditional and green infrastructure.
6) Stimulate innovation in water institutions, with a balance of technical- and governance-based solutions and taking heed of value systems and equity. A failure to adopt a more inclusive approach will make it impossible to design effective green growth strategies or policies."

     This can't be ignored, and with these water scientists trying to help avoid disaster it seems all but inevitable that these suggestions will be followed. Hopefully it's not too little too late, and reform can be made that will be effective throughout the lifetime of our civilization.

A 3D Printed Splint Supports a Childs Life just came out with a story titled "3D-printed tracheal splint supports baby's airways, saves life". The child essentially had no other options, and researchers came up with this 3D printed solution. The splint that was produced by a 3D printer will help support his trachea until it eventually is absorbed by the body, "In two to three years, the trachea will be able to stand on its own...". The technology for 3D printing is only limited by our creativity to use it. It will be very interesting to see how the future unfolds as 3D printing starts to gain momentum and viability.

     3D printing is an amazing feat, and personally I can't wait to see more. What kind of things would you make with a 3D printer?

"Aridion" Nano-Coating Technology Provides Electronics With Complete Protection Against Liquids

     CNN came out with an article on their website, highlighting a new nano-coating technology that after sprayed on a surface, will provide complete protection against liquids. "British-based firm P2i has developed a 'liquid repellent nano-coating' technology -- branded Aridion™ -- that can be sprayed onto a solid surface and, they claim, repel nearly all forms of liquid.". Once something has been sprayed, it is invisible as "The chemical itself is a little less than 50 nanometers wide -- that's 1,000 times thinner than a human hair and, suffice to say, completely invisible to the naked eye.".

     This new technology is very effective, "Now having demonstrated that Aridion can repel almost any type of liquid from almost any type of solid surface and also act, incidentally, as an anti-microbial and flame retardant". The spray can be put on almost anything, and the result is that liquids will bead up on the surface, instead of being absorbed by the material. Now that you can drop your phone in liquid, water damage will be the thoughts of an older generation of technology users.

Google & Nasa Launch First Quantum Computer

     The BBC news reports "Google wants to use the facility at Nasa's Ames Research Center in California to find out how quantum computing might advance techniques of machine learning and artificial intelligence, including voice recognition." The presence of a constructed quantum computer is an amazing feat. The cost of the computer was fifteen million dollars, a small price to pay for the world's first quantum computer. University researchers will also get to use the quantum computer "...20% of the time on the machine via the Universities Space Research Agency (USRA).".

     This computer is unique in that it uses "quantum annealing - a way of distilling the optimal mathematical solutions from all the possibilities.". For right now, the best use they can make of this quantum computer is to choose the most optimal solution among a  problem with multiple solutions. "In one case it took less than half a second to do something that took conventional software 30 minutes.". With the development of the first quantum computer, this is just a glimpse of the capabilities of the future.

     Imagine if they could actually optimize a quantum computer for three dimensional rendering.

3D Scans Show Caterpillar Mid-Metamorphosis

     National Geographic recently published a piece on three dimensional scans revealing what is going on exactly underneath the skin of a cocoon. Essentially it almost seems alien, one creature turning into another. National geographic cites the reason as to why this is so successful for insects is because pre-metamorphosis insects do not have to compete for the same food sources as insects post-metamorphosis. Although people have had a chance to dissect cocoons, it hasn't been documented exactly whats going on inside until now.

     The insects inside literally turn into a soup, being placed in other locations and organs are reorganized throughout the cocoon. They also cited that this could even be used to help fight crime; as larvae from blowflies come so predictably to decaying corpses that they could log the time of death by seeing how far along the blowfly is in its metamorphosis. This is an amazing use of technological advances today, and with new ideas being formed on how to effectively use our advances the future is looking brighter every day.

I wonder if an insects perception of reality is altered, it is a transformation.

BitTorrent study at Universities suggests video game industries misreport illicit digitial downloads

     Per Aalborg University, Northeastern University and "Copenhagen Business School analyzed a filesharing of some 173 computer games over a three-month period between 2010 and 2011." Their objective was to shed light on a subject that doesn't receive much attention; besides what we are told by the industries. "The Entertainment Software Association claims that it had tracked almost 10 million illegal downloads of around 200 games in December 2009. Meanwhile Torrent Freak reported 18.14 million downloads for the five most downloaded PC games on BitTorrent in 2010, with a further 5.34 million downloads of the five most downloaded console games.". This is a huge discrepancy.

     The video game industry reported 10 million illegal video game downloads in the month of December 2009. Torrent Freak stated that there were around 23 million illegal game downloads in all of 2010. If Torrent Freak is to be believed, that averages out at a little under two million illegal downloads a month. If the Entertainment Software Association is to be believed then it would be ten million downloads per month, or more than five times the number of illegal downloads that Torrent Freak reported. It seems logical that it is some intermediary number between two million and ten million downloads per month, the issue is the giant gap reported.

     According to the actual study "They found that 12.6 million unique peers [were sharing illicit video games over a 3 month period]." The study favors TorrentFreak's projection, at an average of about 4.2 million illicit downloads per month. If video game industries are over reporting the amount of illegal downloads, then what is to stop the movie industry and other entities who want to gain momentum for web censorship? We already know that the Movie Picture Association of America supported legislation like SOPA.

     Can we really trust those who stand to gain from anti-piracy legislation to report honest numbers?

Man refuses to stop "Drone-Spying" on a Seattle Woman

     The Atlantic came out with an article yesterday about a man who refused to stop "drone-spying" on a woman in Seattle. "The man insisted that it is legal for him to fly an aerial drone over our yard and adjacent to our windows. He noted that the drone has a camera, which transmits images he viewed through a set of glasses. He purported to be doing "research". We are extremely concerned, as he could very easily be a criminal who plans to break into our house or a peeping-tom."

     Our current laws state "'the air is a public highway,' the Supreme Court declared in 1946.". This appears to put some skepticism to the current laws, as a man could easily use a drone to violate others rights. It is important that the Supreme Court handle this with the utmost of care, as all future drone cases will most likely refer to the impending case. The future carries with it new interpretations of laws, and we must adapt our way of living to our new standard of living.

     How can people lend credence to the idea of not using spy drones to break the law?

2,300 year old Mayan structure destroyed for road gravel

     According to the Huffington Post, "A construction company has essentially destroyed one of Belize's largest Mayan pyramids with backhoes and bulldozers to extract crushed rock for a road-building project, authorities announced on Monday." For something as priceless as a Mayan construction that dates back to an established society 2,300 years ago to be destroyed for gravel is a horrible situation. Belize is just an example of how we must work harder to preserve our world. With the world entering an age of accountability, it is pertinent that people be held accountable for their actions. Belize is just the most recent piece of art destroyed on this planet. Hopefully people will start to realize the value of the world around them, and the atrocities we have committed in our ignorance.

Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in science education

     The Saudi Arabian "kingdom is pouring billions into improving science curricula, endowing new research-oriented universities and establishing scientific agencies.". It is obvious that with this move the government is investing in the future of their country. They are combating generations of religious views by providing a science based template for learning. It is an admirable approach for their government, and a right step towards securing the future of Saudi Arabia.

     Investing in education is the first step to improving the foundation of your country as a whole. By making this move the Saudis hope to gain an edge in one the most fundamental areas of a structured government; Education.

The center of the Earth is not spinning in sync

      According to " research from ANU has revealed that the center of the earth is out of sync with the rest of the planet...". Professor Hrvoje Tkalcic used "earthquake doublets to measure the rotation[al] speed of Earth's inner core...". This information can help us understand the magnetic field that has allowed life as we know it to survive, while also helping us understand the "internal structure and dynamics of our planet.". Right now we are entering a golden age of our understanding of the universe, and every finding that we make furthers our coherence of reality.

South Korea SAT's shutdown after suspected cheating

     SAT tests were recently shutdown in South Korea after a string of scandals broke out. According to the Wall Street Journal " least seven lawmakers have been accused of academic plagiarism...". Also in the article it is stated that an official copy of the SAT can be purchased for around 4500$ by students in South Korea. This provides an obvious example of how the current schooling system while sufficient, fails us in different ways.

     It's hard to propose a new construction for schooling, but it is evident under the current structure school is failing students. Being able to purchase an official SAT booklet for 4500$ is the equivalent of buying an SAT score. The pressure of success has brought people to the brink where they see 4500$ as an investment into their test scores. A solution may not be evident, but it is evident that a solution is needed.

Crows are one of the smartest animals on planet earth

     Crows are one of the smartest animals on the planet. They have over 250 different recognized calls according to Discovery. When a crow caws, it has a particular meaning that it is trying to convey. They are smart enough to comprehend putting change into a vending machine to get food out of it as a reward, as seen in the video above. Discovery also stated that after a crows death, it has been noted that a flock will sit there in absolute silence staring at their fallen comrade. I looked at one, made eye contact and wondered 'what is he thinking right now?'

     Now I want a crow as a pet, so it can collect my change.

More than 1/3 of kids grow up in single parent families

     According to "data center kids count" more than one out of every three kids grows up in a single parent home. Kids living with a single parent at home are at a higher risk than those who are with two parents. It is important to understand that with such a high percentage of kids being raised in a single parent home this does affect our future. Whether it will affect us positively or negatively we may never know, unless there ends up being some underlying piece of data from the future that undermines all people raised with a single parent (highly doubtful). Consider that while something can put a child at risk,  there is no blanket scenario and that if single parent children are at risk the best way to combat that is to give help to single parents.

Where you focus your thoughts matters

     Focusing your thoughts on what you want helps for that thought to become a reality. Think about any invention, before it was actually constructed it had to be visualized and assembled throughout the mind before actually being constructed. In the same way, focusing on something will help your brain focus on making it a reality. Just as you go to kick a soccer ball, your brain must first conceive the notion of kicking the ball and where the energy in that kick will take it.

     If you focus your mind on something, your brain will try and help to make it a reality. Before "Barack Obama" was voted president of the United States, he had to visualize being president. He had to understand the notion, and then carry it through. Something that you do must first be visualized, and then executed. Your mind is an amazing tool, and you can use it to your advantage in so many different ways.
